Some people will drive almost anywhere for a meal if the food is good enough, and if there’s great atmosphere to boot, they don’t mind dining in the middle of nowhere. If you fit that description, you won’t mind making the drive to the ultra-rural restaurant between Laramie and Cheyenne. In addition to live music and a dance floor, this Wyoming bar and grill has loads of personality. Plus, they serve down-home comfort food good enough to make your granny jealous.
The address of the Bunkhouse Bar and Grill is 1064 Happy Jack Road, Cheyenne, but it's almost a 20-minute drive outside the city limits.
If you're headed to or from Laramie on HWY-210, the Bunkhouse is a great place to stop for a meal, but the food is good enough to make the drive just to eat there.
The spacious gravel lot out front provides ample parking for all types of vehicles from compact cars to semi trucks - and the hitchin' post ensures guests on horseback have a place to tie up their transports.
The hours at the Bunkhouse change seasonally; in the winter, they're open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Bunkhouse is closed on Mondays and open from 4 p.m. top 9 p.m. on Tuesdays. When in doubt, you can always call (307) 632-6184 to check current hours.
Inside, the Bunkhouse is bigger than you'd imagine, with a full bar and tons of character. The pine chairs and tables are rustic and bear various branding marks, and the walls are covered with western kitsch.
The atmosphere at the Bunkhouse is interesting enough to entice you to visit at least once, but it's the food that will bring you back to the middle of nowhere again and again. The bacon-topped corn chowder is heaven in a bowl...
...and this bar and grill is rumored to have the best Rocky Mountain oysters on the planet.
An entire section of the menu is dedicated to comfort food classics such as Salisbury steak, pork chops, and chicken-fried steak. The mashed potatoes and house gravy are delicious, but the mashed sweet potatoes slathered in butter and served with brown sugar might easily become your new favorite side dish.
This is Wyoming, so carnivores always leave the Bunkhouse satisfied. The signature beef choices on the menu include gigantic burgers topped with real shredded cheddar cheese and served with fresh-cut fries...
...as well as a selection of steaks such as ribeyes, bacon-wrapped filets, and succulent herb-crusted prime rib.
Other meat specialty items include buffalo brats and beef Wellington.
Even the salads are huge and typically topped with meat.
The Bunkhouse's goal is to make sure no one goes home hungry - or with their waistbands intact. If there's any chance you have room for dessert after your meal, feel free to treat yourself to a molten lava cake piled high with two kinds of cream: ice and whipped.
Or, have a slice of paradise - silk pie dripping with chocolate and lip-smacking delicious.
Afterwards, you should stick around for music and dancing. It's the perfect way to work off dinner and dessert.
The house band, Y-4, plays every Friday and Saturday night, plus there's a live jam session every Sunday afternoon.
