When driving west along I-70 near Georgetown during the winter months, there are some people who are noticing more than simply the snow-covered beauty of the lake and surrounding area. Instead, they are taking a closer look at the lake, trying to determine if it has frozen into a perfect race track yet. These people are ice racers, and they can’t wait to head to the ice to take their vehicle for a spin around the frozen track.
During winter weekends, the lake alongside Georgetown comes alive as it hosts ice races for competitors from all over Colorado.
Although the races have usually begun by now, the lake hasn't had enough ice to safely hold an event yet. The first race of this season is planned for the weekend of February 3 & 4.
Our Gang Ice Racing has been hosting this winter sporting event for over 40 years. This ice racing club is comprised of volunteers who organize and run the races each weekend.
Races are open to drivers of all different skill levels and vehicle type. Everything from a giant, lifted 4WD truck with studded tires to a speedy Subaru with bare rubber tires are welcome to race.
On race day, you will need to pay a registration fee and bring your valid driver's license and insurance to be eligible to race in the beginner's division.
Driver's of all levels are able to participate in one of three race divisions.
The Street Division is for vehicles and tires that are street legal (no modifications...you race on the tires you drove to the event on). The Pro Street Division includes vehicles that are street legal, but have tires that are designed for racing. Lastly is the Competition Division for racers with purpose built ice-racing gigs (these vehicles are not usually street legal).
Beginners have to gain experience to learn the delicate balance between control and speed when racing on ice. This particular type of racing is more about finesse than putting the pedal to the medal.
On select Sundays, Our Gang Ice Racing hosts a "Rookie Race" for less experienced drivers so they can gain both experience on the ice and also confidence in their skills.
