While Portland’s International Rose Test Garden is often the star garden highlighted in media, the oldest garden is this beauty situated in the Piedmont neighborhood. Opened in 1909, the Peninsula Park Rose Garden was the home to the city’s annual rose show until 1917 when Washington Park’s infamous rose garden opened and overshadowed this magnificent garden.
Featuring a centerpiece fountain and historic gazebo, this garden is a sight to see.
At its peak in summer, the garden is awash in color from the 75 different varieties of roses that line its rows.
With more than 5,700 roses artfully arranged in the just under 2-acre garden, it is bursting with color and flair.
You might even get lost in the highly manicured maze-like rows that allow you get up close and personal to stop and smell the roses.
While the rose garden is only 2 acres, the adjoining park and community center sits on 16 acres and features a pool, basketball and tennis courts, and extensive playgrounds.
But nothing beats this hidden gem that is at the height of bloom throughout the summer.
A beautiful place to visit throughout the year, the garden is especially nice on a clear day. With many paved paths and ramps, it is accessible and easy to navigate.
Even when the roses aren't blooming, there is something waiting for you at this beautiful spot tucked away in North Portland.
On our next sunny day, head over to the park and see for yourself.
The Peninsula Park Rose Garden is located at 700 N. Rosa Parks Way. It is open from 5 a.m. to midnight.
