1. Cheap real estate.
If there’s one thing everyone loves, it’s a good bargain, and Detroit has quickly become a hotspot for those looking to buy or rent real estate at affordable prices. While our financial woes over the years have certainly not been all positive, they have resulted in dirt-cheap housing costs, which has drawn plenty of so-called "cool kids" into the Motor City.
2. The music scene.
Sure, Detroit’s history is loaded with musical talent. From Diana Ross to Stevie Wonder to Eminem, the Motor City has given way to plenty of amazing artists. Today, the city boasts several incredible concert venues that draw in performers from across the world. If you love to enjoy live music, you’ll find plenty of chances to do just that here in Detroit.
3. Proximity to Canada.
Is there anything cooler than hopping the border to spend an hour or two in Canada? We think not, and Detroit is lucky to be situated just a stone’s throw from the Canadian border. Many Detroiters flock to Ontario upon turning 19, as the legal drinking age is slightly lower in Canada. As if that weren’t enough, there’s something undeniably fun about taking an international day trip.
4. Plenty of public art.
Art gives the city of Detroit a unique and expressive vibe, and there’s plenty of public creativity to be found throughout the city. From city-commissioned graffiti pieces to breathtaking sculptures and landmarks throughout downtown, there’s always something visually stunning to appreciate in the Motor City.
5. Sports are king in Detroit.
Who doesn’t love a fantastic sports game? Detroit is the place to be for keeping up with all things athletic, whether you’re watching the Pistons play or catching a Red Wings or Tigers game. Yes, we're also home to the Detroit Lions, which might not be our top-performing team -- but they’re ours, and we love them nonetheless.
6. All sorts of new endeavors.
Detroit’s difficult past has given way to plenty of new endeavors, from exciting flagship stores to unique businesses popping up throughout the city. Innovators have flocked to Detroit in droves, and this entrepreneurial spirit has certainly been a selling point for "cool kids" seeking new opportunities.
7. One word: history.
There’s something wonderful about living in a city with a history as rich as Detroit’s. The Motor City has seen its fair share of ups and downs throughout the year, from social tensions to a booming automobile industry. Today, the city has an almost tangible sense of perseverance that’s certainly rooted in its history.
8. Boredom doesn’t exist here.
It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’re interested in: you’ll be hard-pressed to feel bored during your time in the Motor City. Whether you’re perusing modern art at the DIA, jogging along the Detroit Riverfront, reading at the Detroit Public Library, or munching on coney dogs, you’ll always find something to occupy your time. If you’re bored in Detroit, the problem might be a personal one.
9. There’s no room for giving up.
As previously mentioned, Detroit is a city that’s seen its fair share of trials and tribulations. Despite these difficulties, though, Detroiters have always managed to pull through and rebuild. Detroit has both of these, and it’s contagious for those of us who reside within the city limits.
