Some things are forever tied to home. It just takes the scent of a beloved food or an iconic image on a screen to transport us back to Boston. Whether we’re currently traveling or have moved away from the city on a longer-term basis, these 14 sights, smells, tastes, and references will bring on a wave of nostalgia for any Bostonian:
1. Boston's skyline.
The sight of iconic buildings like the John Hancock Tower and the Prudential Center Tower make us wistful for Boston, or serve as proof that we are finally home when returning from a trip.
2. Fall foliage.
Intensely colored foliage is synonymous with New England, especially in Boston. Autumn is a pretty season in many parts of the country, but here, it's particularly dazzling.
3. Fenway Park...
...And the Green Monster. Whenever we see the oldest ball park in the MLB, our heart swells.
4. Boston Common and Public Garden.
We truly are blessed to have so many appealing green spaces throughout the city, but images from these spots especially conjure up thoughts of home.
5. The Charles River.
Cambridge on one side, the city on the other, and all those sailboats and rowers in-between. You can't help but love this sight.
6. Boston Public Library.
BPL ranks up there among the world's best libraries. In addition to its architectural beauty, it makes us feel like we could learn anything when studying in such an inspiring setting.
7. Real chowder.
The best-tasting chowder can only be found in Boston. Not saying Legal's is the gold standard - there are so many excellent options out there - but when we spot that fish logo, we think of home.
8. Dunkin' Donuts.
Out in the big, wide world, we're probably more than a mile away from Dunks at any given time. Still, the sight of any location is a reminder that Boston, with its Dunks-packed streets, is still waiting for us.
9. Cannoli.
The crunch of that first bite into a cannoli brings North End bakeries to mind.
10. Sam Adams beer.
It's called the Boston Beer Company for a reason! Whether you love it or are indifferent to the brew, this is a company you associate with home.
11. The American Revolutionary War.
Our country's history is also Boston's history. Any mention of this era brings up a feeling of pride for our city's place in history.
12. The Big Dig.
Whenever someone complains about a construction project, we think: "You want to complain about traffic disruption? Well, let me tell you about the Big Dig."
13. Wicked anything.
Ah, the slang of home.
14. Running culture in general...
...and this event in particular.
What would you add to this list? What makes you long for the city when you are away? Don’t worry, Boston will always be waiting for you with open arms to welcome you home!
