Beaufort is widely admired for being among the most beautiful towns in the state. Located on Port Royal Island, Beaufort is the second oldest town in South Carolina and is quintessentially Southern. Among the most Southern of things beloved by visitors and residents alike is the enchanting Spanish moss found swaying in the old oak trees that fill the town and surrounds.
Many visitors to Beaufort don't realize this town has a fairly new rails to trails corridor that offers an immersive experience into Lowcounty life.
Developed from the historic Magnolia Line Railroad, the Spanish Moss Trail dishes up 10 miles of pathway designed for pedestrians, bikes and other non-motorized vehicles.
A ride or walk along the Spanish Moss Trail delivers a Lowcountry experience, traversing neighborhoods and gaining sweeping panoramic water views — all while enjoying the experience of following along the path of a historic railway. You'll cross old trestles, pass by houses, and see some gawk-worthy sights along the way.
Also found along the trail, unobstructed views of the old pickle factory (Seacoast Packing Company), now tattered in ruins, yet somehow hauntingly beautiful.
Eventually, the Spanish Moss Trail will extend to a total of 14 miles. While you can bike the trail in no time at all, we suggest bringing a partner and parking a car at the other end and then exploring on foot.
The Spanish Moss Trail is 12 feet wide, paved and open from dawn to dusk. There are two restroom facilites located on the corridor. You may bring your pet as long as he/she is on a leash. The trail has 14 access points, six of which have parking available. Find out more on their official website.
