Well, well, well…. Here’s an interesting statistic! More people moved to VT in 2017 than any other state in the nation!
According to this article by the United Van Lines’ 41st Annual National Movers Study, most of the moves were westbound with the number 1 exception. Vermont. This study examines state to state moves throughout each year, so let’s take a look at who made the list of most moves inbound as well as most moves outbound, shall we?
68 percent of the moves to and from the Green Mountain State in 2017 were incoming.
Vermont is number one, but who else had a lot of new residents?
The top inbound states of 2017 were:
1. Vermont
2. Oregon
3. Idaho
4. Nevada
5. South Dakota
6. Washington
7. South Carolina
8. North Carolina
9. Colorado
10. Alabama
So what draws people to move to these top ten inbound states?
According to Michael Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles:
"This year’s data reflects longer-term trends of movement to the western and southern states, especially to those where housing costs are relatively lower, climates are more temperate and job growth has been at or above the national average, among other factors."
Wait, what?
Well, one thing is for sure: it's absolutely beautiful here!
While more people are moving to Vermont, it seems that the trend elsewhere in the northeast is quite the opposite.
New Jersey, New York and Connecticut have all made the list of top outbound states for the third consecutive year. Newly on the list this year is Massachusetts.
Illinois tops the list for outbound moves in 2017 and has been on the top ten outbound moves for the past nine years.
The top outbound states for 2017 were:
1. Illinois
2. New Jersey
3. New York
4. Connecticut
5. Kansas
6. Massachusetts
7. Ohio
8. Kentucky
9. Utah
10. Wisconsin
