Whether you’ve lived in New York for you entire life or have simply been a resident for an entire hour, there are certain things that will instantly rub off on you when you call our state home. Keep scrolling through the rest of this post to see how many of these habits you relate to as a New Yorker!
1. Always keeping an extra layer with us.
New York's weather can be quite unpredictable, often giving us multiple seasons in a day. So for most of us New Yorkers, we tend to keep spare clothes somewhere nearby.
2. We explain distance in hours, not miles.
For some of America's smaller states, it might be easy to explain where things are through miles. But in New York? It's easier to simply say something is a few hours away rather than discuss the hundreds of miles in distance there is.
3. And we can't help but choose to take the scenic route home.
No matter where we find ourselves traveling, New Yorkers are always up for taking the longer, scenic route to wherever it is that we're going.
4. Getting angry at people who think New York State is just New York City.
Most of us can understand the attraction that New York City has to offer, but we can't help but get frustrated over people thinking the Big Apple is all our state has to offer. There's so much more to be seen and explored when you take a moment to look beyond the big city lights!
5. Putting our windshield wipers up before a storm.
Like putting on your socks before your shoes, putting up our windshield wipers before a big snow or ice storm is a habit most New Yorkers will quickly acquire.
6. Only eating pizza and wings in our state.
Ask us if we want to dine on some pizza or wings when we're out of state and simply out of habit we will automatically say no. We aren't interested in these dishes you call pizza and wings, we'll just wait until we're back home to chow down on the good stuff!
7. Hating everything New England.
Like learning the alphabet, something most of us are raised on in the state of New York is to know better than to like any New England teams. New York forever baby!
8. And being a New York fan even when we're not home.
Being a New York fan is a full time job even if you aren't a fan of sports. We know which team to root for and when to do so, no matter the season or sport!
9. Specifying where exactly in New York we're from.
Whether you're talking to an out-of-towner or a fellow New Yorker, we always like to explain where exactly we're from in the Empire State. With New York being so big, all of our residents have their own quirks and qualities, so we like to make sure that you know exactly which region we hail from when you're making our acquaintance.
10. Associating warm weather with construction.
Like many states in the Northeast, our residents often like to say that we have two seasons - winter and construction. While other places around the country may not have to worry about their roads getting ripped up during the winter, in New York we anticipate all the repairs and construction that will take place once spring starts to arrive.
11. Keeping an eye out for wildlife when we're on the road.
Whether it's deer or moose or even bears or a bobcat, there's plenty of wildlife to keep an eye out for while you're driving on the roads in New York! Even when we're out of state, we can't help but keep our head on a swivel for animals who are trying to play a real life game of Frogger with us.
12. Bursting into laughter when other states complain about winter.
If you're ever interested in experiencing a real winter, try spending a season up here in New York!
13. Breaking out our shorts and sandals anytime it gets above freezing after March.
Who cares if it's going to snow tomorrow? If it's after March (or maybe even March) and things are going to slightly warm up a bit, you can count on us breaking out our favorite attire. We can't help but get excited at any sign of spring and summer!
14. Comparing every grocer and supermarket to Wegmans.
We can't help it! Others around the country may never fully understand our obsession with Wegmans, but if we had it our way we'd never shop anywhere else.
15. Always returning back home.
Whether we leave for a few days or a few years, we'll always end up coming back home to our favorite state!
