New Year’s is around the corner, so now is the time to set your resolutions for 2018. If you need some help thinking of resolutions, we have a few that are perfect for folks living in the Sunshine State:
1. Try something new.
With rumors of a nasty cold front on the way, even some Floridians might want to experiment with things like long pants, socks, and possibly even closed-toe shoes.
2. Get more exercise.
Sometimes it's easy to wrap up in a blanket with some hot cocoa and forget that Florida's winter weather is actually much better than most of the country's. That means we don't have the same excuse of waiting for the spring to get started on our resolutions. Luckily for us, living in the Sunshine State gives us plenty of opportunities.
3. Eat more healthy (and local) foods.
We have so many options here in Florida, with fresh seafood, citrus, strawberries, and more. It's easy to build healthy habits with so many options.
4. Read (and laugh) more.
There are some really great books out there about living in the Sunshine State. Some are eye-opening, like Craig Pittman's "Oh Florida!" and hilarious, like Dave Barry's "Best. State. Ever." Laughter is the best medicine, after all.
5. Take more road trips.
We've probably said it a hundred times, but we'll say it again. Florida is a great state for road trips. This time of year, you'll want to avoid roads like I-4 and take scenic back roads when possible (but isn't that the best way, anyway?). From St. Augustine to the Keys, there is always a fascinating destination nearby.
6. Celebrate the season.
Oyster season, that is. Take advantage of it before it's too hot and it becomes risky business. It's also Florida stone crab season, a delicacy that every Floridian should try at least once.
7. Go to the beach more.
It sounds weird, but you would be surprised how many Floridians don't take advantage of our proximity to the coast, even though we love the beach. It's a great place to relax, de-stress, exercise, and enjoy quality time with family and friends.
8. Take down those decorations...eventually.
We do have a good excuse for leaving our lights up a little longer. Do you know how hard it is to un-light a palm tree?
9. Learn some new recipes.
Some of Florida's most celebrated dishes are really quite easy to make. Try making your own twist on a Cuban sandwich or Key lime pie, and you'll see how much fun Florida cooking can be.
10. Get out and explore more.
Florida has hundreds of parks, and many of them contain beautiful unspoiled beaches and crystal-clear springs that are real natural wonders you won't find anywhere else. Living in such a fascinating, wild state, we owe it to ourselves to get out there and explore it. The colder months mean it's a great time to check out manatee hot spots, and you can hike and camp without being eaten by mosquitoes.
11. Take time to relax.
We should all start a tally and see how many sunsets (or sunrises) we can catch this year. Taking time to turn off the TV or computer and sit a spell will improve your whole outlook.
