With such a rich railroad history, it should come as no surprise that Colorado is home to a number of different train routes that are a must-ride for every member of the family. What may come as a surprise, however, is that Colorado is home to not only multiple train routes, but what has been called one of the most unforgettable vintage train routes in the country:
Located in southwest Colorado is that of the exciting Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad; a "family-friendly ride sure to create memories that will last a lifetime while offering a view of Colorado's mountain splendor inaccessible by highway."
Originally constructed to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains to Denver, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad quickly expanded and soon after became a way to haul freight and passengers via the San Juan Mountains.
Named one of the "10 Most Beautiful Vintage Train Routes in America" by Country Living , the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad features a seat for nearly every budget, each boasting breathtaking views of colorful mountains and the cascading Animas River.
(As per Country Living, "This much loved train has been in continuous operation between the towns of Durango and Silverton since 1882," going on to mention the "majestic vistas enjoyed from the splendor of the antique train cars.")
In addition to the views along this 42-mile trek, the Durango & Silverton also offers a number of different special events, including character meet and greets, Wine & Rails, and the pictured Polar Express.
