One such gem is located in south central Kentucky and is an idyllic spot for those looking for a bit of history and a lot of peace and quiet. South Union Shaker Village is a little known spot in Kentucky that makes for the perfect day trip.
The historic site of South Union Shaker Village is located in Auburn, Kentucky in the midst of acre upon acre of beautiful countryside.
When you arrive at the property, you'll immediately feel a sense of calm as the grounds are wide open, meticulously maintained and simply peaceful. The community was established by the Shakers in 1807 and closed in 1922, and is the western-most Shaker village.

On the self-guided tour you can wander around the property, taking in the history and fine craftsmanship.
While the buildings are simple from the outside, the skill and art that went into creating these structures is definitely apparent. You can stop by the welcome center for a video that explains the history of the area and ask any questions you may have of the knowledgeable and passionate staff.
You'll see artifacts from the time, such as homespun blankets, coverlets, kerosene lamps, ironstone, butter churns, oval boxes, and Shaker furniture. You'll learn about the day-to-day lives of the Shakers who lived there and feel as if you have gone back to that time yourself.
