Some might argue that Maine spends most of the winter feeling like a snow globe. While this might be true, we like to look at it a little more magically. When Maine is covered in snow and the twinkling lights of the holidays are seemingly everywhere, the state goes from just a wintry northern state to something far more special. These are the towns that we think do the best job of capturing the best of wintertime in Maine.
Camden is really two places. One in the summer and one when it looks like this. After a fresh snow in the winter, the streets look like something out of a Dickens novel...cozy, warm and totally inviting.

Bath is a magical little place to visit even when it's warm out, but the winter time is when it looks like something out of a fairy tale. The town celebrates Christmas for the entire month of December beginning with the annual "Old-Fashioned Christmas" celebration. Festivities begin just after Thanksgiving with the Christmas Tree Lighting, Jingle Bell Walk, & an opportunity to visit with Santa. Or, simply take a walk around town anytime in the winter. Chances are it'll feel pretty special no matter what's happening.
Freeport is more than just a place to spend money during the holidays! The town's Sparkle Celebration brings together holiday cheer and shopping in one lovely weekend. The weekend kicked off a few weeks ago with a Parade of Lights down Main Street. But, if you missed it there's still plenty to do! The fun continues with a Sparkle Express Train Adventure, free horse drawn wagon rides, visits with Santa, and a talking Christmas Tree.
Bar Harbor is one of those towns that offers the perfect warm and cozy feeling of New England every time it snows. A walk down the snowy main street includes lots of hidden gems including shops and restaurants perfect for a quick cup of hot chocolate. Or, something stronger!

Maine's most well-known city might be full of tourists in the summer, but during a winter snow the city takes on a quiet, cozy feel. With the red brick buildings and atmospheric street lights even a snow globe couldn't match this!
Make sure to explore the city at night when the lights are strung throughout the trees creating the most perfect winter wonderland. On December 16th see the harbor light up for the 18th Annual Boat Parade of Lights beginning at 4:30pm. For something extra special, book a trip on Casco Bay Cruises.
