America is filled with stunning natural wonders. Some of them are simply staggering, while others combine tremendous beauty with a dash of weirdness. This spot in the southwest is absolutely gorgeous and more than a bit bizarre. Here’s why the White Sands Monument is the nation’s oddest natural wonder.

This might look like an arctic landscape, but it’s actually a sunny desert in Colorado.

The White Sands National Monument is the largest gypsum field of its kind on Earth.

Located in the Tularosa Basin and encircled by mountains, the national park is famous for its sweeping dunes of white gypsum crystals.

The dunes are actually drifting through the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico at a rate of about 30 feet per year.

The sugary gypsum dunes are the result of mineral-rich water evaporating from nearby Lake Lucero.

There are plenty of ways to explore the dunes. Visitors can hike four marked trails on foot or experience the desert by car or bus tour.

You can also grab a sled and whiz down the surreal slopes of this national park. Sounds like Christmas in July to us.
