If you’re wanting to go on a new adventure in Washington, there are all kinds of unique locations in our state that you can explore! Out of the numerous oddities here in the Northwest, these are 8 of the weirdest places that you’ve got to visit:
1. Gravity Hill, near Prosser
If you drive up to the marked start line on this mysterious road near downtown Prosser,
put your car in neutral and take your foot off the brake, you'll supposedly start to roll uphill until you reach the end line a little way up the road! While some have questioned if it's just an optical illusion, others have tested the elevation to prove there's in fact an incline!
2. Afterglow Vista, Friday Harbor
McMillin Mausoleum is the peculiar burial site of John McMillin, a significant figure in bringing Roche Harbor to life. If you enter through the initial gate you'll come across three flights of symbolic steps and in the middle of the structure there's a limestone table, which was made to represent the dining room table. Around the table are chairs, one for each family member with corresponding names on the back. This location was chosen in particular because when the sun goes down during the summer, light shines through the trees and beautifully illuminates the tomb!
3. Marsh's Free Museum, Long Beach
You may know this museum as home to Jake the Alligator Man, a bizarre half-man, half-alligator on display! They feature a wide assortment of strange curiosities including vintage gaming machines and one-of-a-kind gifts in their souvenir shop!
4. Temple of Power, near North Cascades Visitor Center
Inspired by the Pantheon in Greece, this unique public temple was constructed from recycled bits of giant circuit breakers for its columns. The futuristic work was made in honor of the small town of Newhalem that has a long history of providing electricity to Seattle!
5. Seattle Gum Wall
Whether you have a piece to add yourself or you just want to stop by and admire this wall full of chewed Bubbalicious, this odd landmark in Post Alley under Pike Place Market is definitely a must see if you're downtown!
6. Dick and Jane's Spot, Ellensburg
Located on the corner of 1st & Pearl Street across from the fire station, you can find a truly one-of-a-kind artsy estate. The house, fence and yard are covered with thousands of bicycle wheel reflector sculptures, bottle caps and so much more! While the inside's not currently open to the public, you can still view pretty much all of the awesomeness out on the sidewalk!
7. Garbage Eating Goat, Spokane
No need to find a garbage can - this odd steel goat sculpture in Riverfront Park will eat your small pieces of paper trash at the push of a button with the aid of its vacuum digestive system!
8. Bike Eating Tree, Vashon
Just off Vashon Highway, you can find this unusual two-wheeler bicycle infused into a tree trunk! Supposedly a long time ago someone left their bicycle leaning against the tree, and as the tree kept growing it enveloped the bike and now lifts it over seven feet off the ground!
