If you love all things cheesy then you absolutely must visit this cheese-themed restaurant in Connecticut. We all know that cheese when it is melted just becomes a gooey yummy topping for just about anything! A relatively new arrival on the restaurant scene, Au Chalet is the new go-to place for cuisine that features melted cheese. When you see what the chefs are dishing up on the menu, you realize that it is a restaurant where food dreams do come true.
Au Chalet is located in downtown New Haven near Yale University and is a newcomer on the restaurant scene having just opened in May of this year.
Adil Chokairy dreamed up this restaurant to introduce the popular Swiss style of dining called raclette.
Raclette is a half wheel of cheese that is heated slowly to a bubbling point under a warmer. It then becomes the topping for your food.
Au Chalet takes the business of melted cheese seriously. The cheese is under constant watch to make sure that it melts perfectly and does not burn.
When the raclette is melted, it is scraped directly off the wheel onto your plate.
Small potatoes, cornichons, and small pickled white onions make the base of this delicious cheese plate. The combination of ingredients topped with melted cheese will create an explosion of flavor in your mouth.
If for some odd reason, you prefer your cheese to be unmelted, Au Chalet offers a stunning assiette valaisanne, which is a yummy platter of meats and cheeses.
For lunch, you can also choose one of the fresh tartines, which are similar to the American open-faced sandwich. The Saint Maurice with smoked salmon, avocado creme fraiche, and red onions is unbelievably scrumptious.
A cheese-themed restaurant would certainly not be complete without a warm and bubbly fondue.
Served directly at your table, the fondue is rich and luscious. Dip chunks of bread into the fondue to soak up all of the cheesy goodness.
The interior of Au Chalet is rustic with a wood-paneled interior.
You feel as though you have just stepped into a Swiss ski lodge when you enter. The aroma of melted cheese is lingering and at once you feel warm and comfortable.
The owner of Au Chalet, Adil Chokairy began his restaurant business in New Haven just three years ago.
He began selling crepes from a tricycle that he rode around the Yale University campus. Two years ago he opened Crêpes Choupette where he continues to serve his highly demanded crepes. His cheese-themed restaurant, Au Chalet is located right next door and he continues to be a favorite of Yale students and faculty.
Perhaps one of the best times to visit Au Chalet is during happy hour.
From 5 to 7 p.m., the restaurant has some great happy hour specials. Because the time frame is a bit later than the norm, you can grab these specials while you are at dinner.
So are you ready to try a plate of cheesy goodness at Au Chalet?
Au Chalet can be found at 24 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT 06510. It is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
