According to a study by Philanthropy.com, Texas ranks as the 12th most giving state overall, according to how much it gave to charity in 2012. Residents of Texas gave 3.59% of their income to charity, which equates to a whopping $15,897,192,000 in total. Everyone knows Texans have a big heart, so this might come as no surprise.
However, have you ever wondered which towns in Texas give the most to charity? We used the same website and broke the data down by metropolitan statistical areas to determine which cities and towns have the biggest hearts (and maybe wallets) of all.
Just ahead of Amarillo is Lubbock, with a total contribution of $157,324,000, which equates to 4.46% of income given to charity. Sounds like Lubbock has some pretty honorable folks!
Out in the west Texas town of El Paso, the giving ratio is only 2.61%, but the total contribution in 2012 was $160,755,000. The size of people's hearts in El Paso just might be as big as the Franklin Mountains in this picture.
Good ol' Tyler comes in at number 7, with a giving ratio of 5.53% and total contributions of $176,004,000. For a small town, people there sure do have big hearts!
The Beaumont-Port Arthur area might not always have the nicest words spoken about them, but they make up for it with their charitable donations. In fact, people gave a total of $186,517,000 in 2012 to charity!
It turns out this city does much more for the state than bring in money with the tourism industry. Residents here gave a whopping $1,030,949,000 to charity in 2012, equating to 3.29% of their income.
It probably comes as no surprise that Houston is on the list, considering how many incredibly wealthy people live there. In 2012, they gave $4,948,879,000 to charity. At least all that money is going to good use!
Finally, Dallas comes in at number 1, giving $5,265,147,000 to charity, or 3.77% of their income. Keep up the good work Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington!
