When you think of the world “timeless,” you think never-changing, classic, and a spot that remains the same but only gets better with time. Louisville celebrates both new and innovative eateries as well as those that have stood the test of time, and there is one particular restaurant in Kentucky that definitely has done the latter. Wagner’s Pharmacy is that timeless restaurant where you have to eat at least once, if only for the classic diner – and old Louisville – experience.
Located right across the street from Churchill Downs and near the University of Louisville, Wagner's Pharmacy may just be the most obvious choice when it comes to timeless restaurants in our city.
In 1922, Leo Wagner purchased the pharmacy, changed the name and started marketing his store to the horsemen at the neighboring race track. The method worked and what began as a simple gathering spot has turned into a nationally known legend.
Despite the recognition, Wagner's remains timeless and maintains that classic diner feel.
The interior is large, though still often crowded, and if you can snag a spot at the counter, do it to get the full experience. Wagner's can be interesting in that the service and consistency can be a bit hit or miss; however, you'll always find a classic atmosphere and a bit of Louisville history.

Wagner's is open everyday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and they truly shine in their breakfast menu.
No matter the time of day, you should order something from the breakfast menu during your first visit. Although, you may want to go early because they have been known to run out of some of the favorites by lunch time!
As for the rest of the menu, stick with classics or go with the special of the day.
Diner favorites like Grilled Cheese are great and the special for the day is always some of the best comfort food around. Go in with some time to spare (sometimes they're super fast and other times it takes awhile), and relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
Wagner's Pharmacy has become a bit of a tourist stop in Louisville these days, but it remains a timeless city classic.
Regulars continue to occupy the counter, while others are welcomed with a smile. It's just one of those famous spots in town that you have to try at least once.
