The natural beauty found at Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre (located just a half hour west of Denver) may be drawing in more than just those who want to hear an amazing concert or get a great workout. Legend has it, there are also a few ghosts hanging around and haunting the 640 acre park.
The amphitheatre, which is built into surrounding rocks, took its current form in 1941 and has had such legends as the Beatles and U2 grace its stage.
But, the area has been used for concerts since the early 1900s and has allegedly been home to several ghosts since then.
As the sun begins to set, those who know the popular story of one of those ghosts, the Headless Hatchet Lady, may have a little shiver run down their spine.
Apparently, apparitions of a headless woman have appeared to both mischievous children and couples getting a little to frisky in the shadows of the rocks.
One theory is that it is the ghost of a woman who homesteaded in the area that became Red Rocks. As the story goes, "Old Mrs. Johnson" would pull a coat over her head and swing a hatchet to ward off her daughters' suitors. Some are even brave enough to hike the trail to an old graveyard (where many think she may be buried) at Red Rocks in the dark to try to hear or see her.
Another theory is that the Headless Hatchet Lady is the spirit of a homeless woman who lived in a cave in the area in the 1950s.
The cave is now fenced off to prevent curious folks from exploring inside.
It is also told that the Hatchet Lady was a bit upset when planning and building of the amphitheatre began, and even interfered with construction in mysterious ways.
The spooky reputation of Red Rocks is both intriguing and a little frightening. Just be careful next time you are wondering around Red Rocks after dark. You never know who you might run into!
