Day trips are the best. You reap many of the benefits of a break without having to expend much time or money in the process. We’re always hunting for places that provide that mini-getaway experience, whether it’s for a few hours or for a full day. Luckily, there’s a restaurant in Wayland that does just that.
The Dudley Chateau is a scant 22 miles west of Boston.
Although the Chat is a short distance off Mass Pike, it feels more remote because it’s situated on a dead-end road, in a residential neighborhood.
Its scenic — and unlikely — setting makes you feel as if you’ve been transported much further, to a place where the pace of life is slower.
As you cruise past neatly mowed, green lawns you’ll probably assume you’ve taken a wrong turn. Not to worry. You’re in exactly the right place!
As you can see, The Dudley Chateau boasts nary a turret. But who needs an actual castle, when you have an eatery brimming with rustic charm and overlooking Dudley Pond?
Try to score a spot at one of the tables near the windows (like table two).
That way, you can spend your meal savoring views like these…
…and one of the best burgers you’ve ever tasted — an entire section of the menu is devoted to them.
The restaurant is renowned for its Chat Burger, which features 10 ounces of Angus steak grilled over an open flame.
Overall, portions here range from large to gargantuan.
If 10 ounces of beef seems overly ambitious, you can order a "mini" version of each burger. Try the Cochituate Burger, which is slathered with beef and bean chili for a yummy, if not messy, meal. The steak tips at The Dudley Chateau are also superb.
Wraps and salads are available if you’re in the mood for lighter fare.
Pair your meal with one of the beers on tap or with a $5 glass of wine you’ll actually want to drink (no, really)!
The Chat often operates at a slow mosey. Settle in to savor your food, the friendly service, and the views. There’s no need to rush. For now, at least, you’re not on city time.
The Dudley Chateau is located at 20 Crest Road in Wayland.
