You might not want to be caught hiking out here after dark though. An eerie legend dating back to the 1800s claims that this park is haunted by the ghost of a horse thief and his dog.
This horse thief is believed to have been a local drifter who made a living by stealing and selling horses. His small dog was his only companion.
As the story goes, it didn't take long for locals to realize what the horse thief was up to. They formed a mob and pursued the thief.
It was on the banks of the Nehalem River in Scaponia Park that the horse thief and his dog eventually came to a sticky end. Their ghosts are believed to haunt the park to this day.
On certain nights, a shadowy figure of a man and his dog can be seen wandering along the riverbank.
Many campers have reported seeing strange apparitions in the park. Perhaps the horseman and his dog are out for looking for their revenge?
