These brand new domes are a revolution in aurora viewing! Lie in luxurious comfort and watch the aurora borealis dance above you. And if the aurora isn’t out that night, you will get a gorgeous view of the stars in the dark Alaskan night. This vacation destination is opening November 15, 2017, and is destined to be a hit and the latest addition to any Alaskan bucket list.
The Borealis Basecamp is a 35-minute drive north of Fairbanks off the Elliott Highway. This beautiful spot is on a north-facing ridge crest at an altitude of 1,200 ft with nothing on the horizon to interfere with the view.
This place is perfect for a romantic getaway or an adventure with a friend to see the arctic's flashiest attraction: the aurora borealis or northern lights.
Most winter nights will offer a wonderful opportunity to watch the show in the sky from your cozy bed. According to Borealis Basecamp, if you stay three nights in Fairbanks you are 98% likely to see the aurora.
The domes are 20 feet in diameter, 12 feet tall, 314 square feet and designed for 2 people. They have a bathroom with a shower, a queen bed, and a kitchenette. You can also choose two twin beds if you prefer.
Nautique Sky, a partner company, offers dog mushing tours in the daylight hours to round out your fun arctic vacation. Stop at an Arctic Oven warm-up tent to learn more about trail life before returning to your igloo.
If the aurora doesn't appear the night you head out there, it is still a remarkable place for stargazing. The complete darkness of this area, far from the lights of town, will give you an excellent opportunity to get lost in the night sky.
There is a yurt at the Basecamp that's 30 feet in diameter, ample space for group aurora viewing in the evenings and is used as a dining room for the domes. Breakfast is complimentary and lunch and dinner are available for purchase.
Aurora photography classes are offered by Aurora Bear, one of the partner businesses of the Basecamp. Portrait photography services are also offered if you would like photos taken in the area or under the aurora.
You'll be able to continue perfecting your techniques as long as the aurora lasts outside your dome, and warm up inside when you need to. This is a probably the coziest place for an aurora photo shoot on Earth.
Enjoy coffee in your sunny nook in your dome before heading out for more Alaskan adventures. Activities in the area include ice fishing, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, and trails for walking as well as the photography classes and dog mushing tours.
