As we get closer to Halloween some of us (like me) start to think a little more morbid. Maybe it’s all the big-budget disaster movies getting me thinking, but those films are always focused on coastal states and larger towns like New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. Still, who are we to say “it could never happen here”? Arkansas has a few natural disasters to be wary of as well…and just to be a little more paranoid, who’s having a close look at what exactly we have here in the Natural State that could be helpful to us or harmful to anyone else?
This is an absolute worst case nightmarish scenario...but much of Arkansas is farm country and if there were ever to be a catastrophic plague of insects descending upon our crops, what would we do about such a disaster (how do you even handle that?) and how would it affect the state in the long run? Yes, that's one of those midnight mind wandering worries...but what if?
Okay, so at least we wouldn't have to worry about an earthquake ripping apart the entire state of Arkansas since the New Madrid Seismic Zone is in the northeast part of the state. Still, if a massive quake (or series of earthquakes) were to hit the area, the state would definitely take a huge financial blow due to tourism in the area being so popular.
Floods are like tornadoes - just as swift and deadly. Arkansas has had its share of lethal flash floods and a history of severe flooding that's taken a toll on the state's finances (the flood of 1927 being the most expensive). Could the Natural State financially keep their head above water in a severe flood like that of 1927 or 1937?
It gets bad here when it comes to tornadoes, and any Arkansan who's experienced a strong twister can tell you an anomaly like a series of F4s and F5s ripping through the midwest could spell absolute danger for Arkansas as far as finances go. Yes, you'd only see something like that in a disaster movie...but what if?
"Why would they bother with Arkansas?" some may ask. We have an entire arsenal of weapons in Pine Bluff, and we're pretty well-armed in that aspect. If some evil empire wanted to disable America entirely, they'd go after all of the large scale weaponry, and that would mean going after the Pine Bluff Arsenal.
Yes, yes, it’s all morbid thinking…but hey, the world’s always been a crazy place and strange things happen all the time. Now if only I had the resources to become a survivalist, I’d be getting somewhere. Sound off in the comments – if anything could knock a sizable hole (yes, even a meteor shower) in Arkansas and severely or even permanently damage the state, what would it be?
