We know how to eat well in the Bluegrass State and our favorites spots are definitely those hidden gems that remind us of an old recipe, or a simpler time, or even our childhood. Some of these local favorites have become quite popular across the state, and then there are those that quietly shine and just continue doing what they do best — serving up great food. We’ve rounded up 11 of the most scrumptious restaurants in Kentucky, and unless you grew up in these towns, chances are, you never knew they existed.
1. Dovie's — 107 W 4th St. Tompkinsville, KY 42167
Dovie's is one of those places that if you happen to be within an hour of their doorstep, you need to just go ahead and make the side trip. Known for their deep fried burgers, order yours "unsqueezed" with the special sauce, pickles, and onion for the classic experience. With a bag of chips and an ice cold RC Cola, a meal at Dovie's is straight out of the past and perfect for your taste buds.

2. Red River Rockhouse — 4000 KY-11 Campton, KY 41301
Located in the heart of Red River Gorge, this hidden gem is the perfect spot to refuel after a day of hiking and exploring. Don't let its location fool you, their food is outstanding with locally sourced ingredients and freshly made meals. They serve breakfast (weekends only), lunch, and dinner and have the perfect mix of healthy and comfort food choices.
Known as the best fried chicken in Eastern Kentucky, Joe's is a classic drive-in with a mouthwatering menu. The chicken is the real star here, but the burgers are also tasty. Seek this place out whenever you're near Isom, grab some chicken and find a quiet place for a picnic.

Bread of Life Cafe is a lovely, family-owned restaurant that serves some of the best food in the area. You can choose from their vast menu or mouthwatering buffet and you can also look forward to friendly service and a warm atmosphere. 5. Blue and White Grill — 318 Main St. Hazel, KY 42049
Enjoy a delicious meal at this charming country diner in the small town of Hazel. You'll be welcomed as a friend and have a tough time choosing from their menu that is filled with homemade classics. Be sure to save room for a slice of pie!
6. Big Dipper — 2820 W Parrish Ave. Owensboro, KY 42301
Unless you're from Owensboro, chances are you haven't heard of the Big Dipper. But this place is legendary for their burgers, onion rings, and shakes and it's definitely worth the wait in the usually long line. Keep in mind, they only accept cash, but this is one of the spots that you have to try at least once.
7. Paula's Hot Biscuit — 311 W Water St. Hodgenville, KY 42748
If you haven't heard of this classic Kentucky breakfast destination, add it to your list of must-try restaurants. Paula's Hot Biscuit is known for their biscuits and traditional southern breakfast favorites like country ham, grits, and biscuits and gravy. Definitely go for breakfast, but keep them in mind for lunch, too. Paula's is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so plan accordingly!

If you're looking for some ultimate comfort food, then you have to try any meal of the day at Family's Main Street Restaurant in Walton. This little family-owned diner serves the classics — just like grandma used to make. They only take cash, so keep that in mind, and be sure to go hungry!

It may be unassuming from the outside, but inside you'll find the most mouthwatering buffet of barbecue and other delicious choices. Situated along Main Street in the tiny town of Sonora, Brooks Cafe and General Store has been family owned since 1961. Not much has changed since then, which is why you will absolutely love the nostalgic experience of dining here. Open Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., it's a popular gathering spot for locals, but if you happen to be passing through during the week, stop in for a home-cooked meal and wholesome country atmosphere.
11. Jackson's Restaurant — 203 S 3rd St. Richmond, KY 40475
In Richmond, Jackson's has made quite a name for itself, and now is the time to let Kentucky in on the secret. This friendly restaurant has a fantastic lunch buffet with all of the homemade, southern classics and you absolutely must try one of their burgers. The staff will make you feel right at home and you'll be anxious to return for another meal.
