Halloween is around the corner and you know you wanna scary yourself silly. Why not skip the corny haunted houses though and check out some places that have real haunted backgrounds? Don’t worry, Michigan has plenty of spectacularly spooky places that are sure to have you crying in your sleep.

Famed pilot Amelia Earhart was a guest at this Marquette inn before her death. It's said that her ghost makes the occassional visit in Room 502. Guests have reported witnessing flickering lights and odd noises from under the bed. Ready to book a room here yet?

Also known as Holy Cross Orphanage, this site was built in 1915 and abandoned by the mid-century. Stories of abuse abound in this Catholic facility, and after a child died from pneumonia that she caught when she played outside during a blizzard, the nuns were said to have displayed her dead body as a lesson to the other orphans. To this day, people have reported hearing sounds of children crying in this now empty space.

It's said this place sits on a Native American murial site and that the souls of both native peoples and American troops continue to haunt the grounds.

In its heyday, this facility, also known as the Southwest Michigan Tuberculosis Sanitarium, was considered a state-of-the-art facility for treating patients suffering from TB. As the deadly threat of tuberculosis subsided in the 1960s, the place became the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital. To this day, neighbors of this building are said to hear the wailing of souls of those who spent their last years confined to the institution.

Visit here if you dare. This former fire house was ill-fated back in the day when it burned twice and its fire chief was killed there. Word is he still haunts the place, as guests have reported unexplained noises.

This facility opened in 1952 and was considered one of the finest facilities in country for treating psychiatric patients. That is until reports became public decades later that patients were forced to sleep in hallways, were left with nothing to do but chain smoke and watch television all day, and were even subjected to attacks by staff members and other patients. The facility now sits derelict and subject to trespassers, curious to see this haunting place.

This is the oldest state prison for Michigan and it's said that terrible things happened here. Prisoners were tortured and neglected. Though the place has been renovated into housing and artist studios, residents report paranormal visitors... Perhaps the tortured souls of the inmates?

Quite possibly the creepiest place in the Traverse City area, this state hospital originally opened as an insane asylum in 1885. Patients with tuberculosis, typhoid, diphtheria, and polio were also treated in this facility, appropriately designed in Gothic-style.
