Occasionally, you’re not going to have an hour or more to have a nice, sit-down meal at a restaurant. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get quality, delicious food! With the recent surge of food trucks in Indy, you’ll have no trouble finding something fantastic to eat when you’re on the go. Check out nine of the best trucks in the city.
1. Gaucho's FIre
For a fantastic take on Brazilian cuisine, you’ll want to make a pit stop at this truck. Featuring an amazing Brazilian steak sandwich, as well as beef and chicken skewers, Gaucho’s Fire serves up some of Indy’s best meals. While you’re there, try a coxinhas — a popular Brazilian street food snack — which is made of a savory, fried dough shaped around creamy chicken salad filling. The team at Gaucho’s recommends calling ahead to pre-order this item because they sell out fast!
2. Spice Box
Serving up a menu full of spicy Indian cuisine, Spice Box is a truck you’ll be chasing down whenever you see it. This truck features unique spins on classic Indian dishes, such as tandoori Tacos and naan wraps, while also providing delicious vegan and gluten-free options.
3. R&R Extreme Wings
Roaming the streets of Indianapolis, you’ll likely run into this food truck that serves up mouth-watering chicken wings featuring many house-made sauces. Options include Honey BBQ, Sweet Mustard, Spicy Garlic, and the establishment’s own R&R Extreme Special Sauce.
4. Pierogi Love Indy
Pierogis, while known for being a staple in central New York, are Eastern European treats more commonly known to us Midwesterners as dumplings. These dough-wrapped delights, usually featuring either a savory or sweet filling, are the focus of Pierogi Love Indy, a truck you’re likely to find serving the south side of the city. With both specialty and traditional takes on pierogis, as well as 100% all-beef hot dogs, this food truck has become a sought-after stop for locals.
5. Der Pretzel Wagen
If you’re in more of a snacking mood, you can make a stop at Der Pretzel Wagen, which features freshly-baked handmade pretzels, as well as pretzel sandwiches with pastrami, turkey, or roast beef.
6. Byrne's Grilled Pizza
You’re likely to recognize this food truck by its giant "BGP" sticker, but this Indianapolis favorite’s menu is anything but abbreviated. You’ll find multiple classic pizzas as well as BGP specialties like the "Hey Zeus," which features pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, onion, and banana peppers.
7. The Twisted Sicilian
Until recently, this food truck was known as "Little Eataly," but has since rebranded to become The Twisted Sicilian. You can’t miss this bright purple truck featuring a selection of delicious panini sandwiches and a Sicilian spin on everyone’s favorite comfort food: mac & cheese.
8. Citizen Hash
Part of the "global street food revolution," as it states on this truck’s website, Citizen Hash serves up a rotating menu, often featuring meals like the spicy crab rice bowl, Korean BBQ tacos, and the carnitas grilled cheese.
9. Caveman Truck
Billed as one of the first paleo/primal food truck concepts in existence, this truck focuses its menu on an "ancestral nutritional template." In other words, it wants you to embrace eating like a caveman. Menu items change daily and have included dishes like BBQ nachos, grass-fed chicken and pork burgers, and locally-grown brussel sprouts fried in coconut oil.
There are so many food truck choices and it can be tough to pick just one. Don’t worry, you can find several of these trucks (and many others) at Food Truck Fridays downtown. (250 W. Georgia St., Indianapolis, IN 46225)
