Just to clarify, wineries produce wines, vineyards grow the grapes. Some of these places are both, and some do one or the other. They can either be tucked away near a small historic town or just a short drive from the city. Whether just part of a long vacation, or an afternoon activity, these are some calming and beautiful places where you can enjoy a relaxing tasting or tour and take in the scenery.
1. Pirtle Winery, Weston
Open since 1978 on 502 Spring Street in historic Weston, Pirtle is partly housed in an 1867 church building, with its production building across the street. They feature an indoor garden with wine bar, tasting room and gift shop, and outdoor wine garden between the buildings. They offer tours, tastings, and event venue rentals for up to 50 guests. 2. Villa Antonio Winery, Hillsboro

3. Augusta Winery, Augusta
Located at 5601 High Street in Augusta, this winery opened in 1988. 4. Cave Vineyard, Ste. Genevieve
Featuring a cave on the property you can visit, this vineyard is located at 21124 Cave Road in St. Genevieve. Summer hours (April-October) are 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Located at 201 Montelle Drive in Augusta, this winery features the Klondike café, gift shop, winery and vineyard, and also has a distillery where they make different flavors of brandy. 7. Sugar Creek Winery, Defiance
A winery and a vineyard, Sugar Creek is located at 125 Boone Country Lane in Defiance. They are open all year for wine tastings, live music, weddings and other event venues. 8. Cedar Lake Cellars, Wright City

9. Adam Puchta Winery, Hermann
Adam Puchta Winery is the oldest continuously owned family winery in the country and was established in 1855. Located at 1947 Frene Creek Road in historic buildings and cellars, they feature daily wine tastings, private parties, a gift shop and picnics are welcome. You can also stay in the Homestead Guesthouse, with rates starting at $200 per night. You will want to book pretty far in advance, however, as they are currently booked well into January. 10. Twin Oaks, Farmington
Located at 6470 Highway F in Farmington, enjoy their tasting room located in the middle of acres of the surrounding vineyard or in the outdoor patio and enjoy live entertainment on the weekends. They are open Wednesday-Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Friday-Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. They have an annual grape stomp each September, are a great wedding and special event venue and offer online shopping. 11. Blumenhof Vineyard and Winery, Dutzow
This vineyard and winery located at 13699 South Highway 94 in Dutzow is open Monday-Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:30 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 5:30 p.m. From May through early November, they also feature food from the Brathous Grill and live music each weekend.
