These days we’re all taking pictures constantly with our phones and it’s hard to imagine a time when we couldn’t easily record our memories and surroundings. Photography really hasn’t been around that long in the scheme of things though, and in its early days it was a rarity. Looking back to some of earliest photos of New Hampshire is absolutely fascinating – we hope you enjoy this collection of our favorites as much as we did!
1. Claremont, 1836-39 (exact date unknown). Monadnock Mill No. 1 on Water Street.
2. Jaffrey, 1896. Trail near Mount Monadnock.
3. Jaffrey, 1870-1880 (exact date unknown). The "Mountain House" on Mount Monadnock.
4. Keene, 1900-1920 (exact date unknown). Children in schoolhouse.
5. Manchester, 1909. Amoskeag Mills workers, including very young girls.
6. Grafton, 1897. Family farm.

12. Mount Washington. The Boston Public Library's records only state that this stereograph comes from between 1850 and 1920, but based on the timeline of the Mt. Washington railway construction (completed in 1869) we believe this photo dates back to that decade.
