Are you looking for some history around San Francisco? These cities around the Bay area will offer a chance to enjoy some history, museums, and sightseeing.
1. Alameda
The island Alameda occupies what was originally a peninsula connected to Oakland. And today, there are a lot of historical nuggets here like the Alameda Historical Museum and the USS Hornet Museum. Take the time to enjoy the town and discover some restaurants as well.
2. Old Oakland
This part of Oakland will really surprise you and take you back in time. Old Oakland is a historic district, and across Broadway from Chinatown. Make sure to check out the structures on Victorian Row, some of which include the 1878 Nicholl Block building.
3. Sausalito
This beautiful town offers a lot of engaging history and attractions. A long history that can be traced to the indigenous settlements as well as interactive attractions. Check out the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito as well.
4. Sonoma, California
Outside of wine of course, Sonoma has a lot of history. Sonoma was once the capital of the seceded California Republic, and the colonial plaza and Mission in town have a varied and dynamic history.
5. San Rafael
This town offers a lot of attractions as well as great food. Outside of the local history, you can visit the Museum of International Propaganda in San Rafael. Also, more importantly, check out the Marin History Museum.
6. Pescadero
This small town near Half Moon Bay offers more historical surprises than you think. The town predates the state of California and includes many tales from the early days of Wells Fargo Company. Check out the Pescadero museum.
7. St. Helena
Escape the wineries for the geyser in Calistoga and more oddities. If you're into California history then check out Sharpsteen Museum as well as Robert Louis Stevenson Museum. There is a lot more here than meets the eye.
8. Nevada City
Visit the county seat of Nevada County for a historical return to the Gold Rush days. There is a Downtown Historic District with lots of Gold Rush era attractions and mines of course.
