Virginia is known for its healthcare. I mean, really, even national articles have mentioned Virginia’s healthcare as a reason why we are more likely to survive the Zombie Apocalypse than many other states – as we mentioned earlier this week. But truly, all jokes aside, we are fortunate here in Virginia to have nearly 130 hospitals throughout the state. Best of all, we have access to world class healthcare in even the most unexpected places.
US News recently released their rankings of the top Virginia hospitals. Not only does Virginia have 4 nationally ranked hospitals, we have another 15 that are regionally ranked for their superior performance. Here are onces that came out on top…
As the #1 ranked hospital in the state, VCU Hospital is a teaching hospital for the Medical College of Virginia. Currently, VCU is nationally ranked for 3 adult specialities and 1 pediatric specialty, and they received high-performance marks for a total of 6 adult specialties.
Another top healthcare facility, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is nationally ranked for 2 adult specialties and received high-performance marks for 7 adult specialties.

Located in Fairfax, this Inova hospital ranks nationally for 1 adult specialty and 2 pediatric specialties. Inova Fairfax is also ranked #3 in Virginia, and #1 in the Washington Metro area.

As the 4th of Virginia's 4 nationally ranked hospitals, University of Virgina's Medical Center has long been respected for its superior care. UVA is ranked nationally in 1 adult and 4 pediatric specialties, with high-performance marks in 4 adult specialties and recognition for patient safety.
Ranked regionally for 4 adult specialties, Carilion Roanoke Memorial scored almost as high as the nationally ranked hospitals. This healthcare provider in Roanoke is recognized for superior care in the Shenandoah Valley and is considered the 5th best hospital in Virginia.
Although tied with 2 other hospitals for 6th place in Virginia, Bon Secours Saint Mary's Hospital receives high performance marks in 5 adult procedures and conditions, as well as receiving recognition in both Central Virginia and a #2 ranking in the RIchmond Metro area.
Also tied for 6th place, Sentara Williamsburg Regional Center performed almost as highly as the nationally ranked hospitals in 1 adult procedure and receives high performance scores in 4 adult procedures. This medical center is tied for the 6th best hospital in Virginia and is #2 in the Virginia Beach Metro area.
As one of the Shenandoah Valley's premier hospitals, Winchester Medical Center is recognized regionally and came close to national ranking for 4 adult specialties. The center is tied for 6th in Virginia and was given high performance marks in at least 1 adult procedure/condition.

As part of a 5-way tie for 9th place, Centra Lynchburg General Hospital offer an impressive performance, with close to national rankings in at least 4 adult specialties and a high performance rating in 1 other adult procedure/condition. This hospital is tied for 6th in Virginia and is recognized for superior performance in the Shenandoah Valley.

This Fairfax hospital ties for 9th place in Virginia and received near national rankings for 1 adult specialty. With high performance ratings in another 3 adult procedures/conditions, Inova Fair Oaks is rated #3 in the Washington Metro area.
Another part of the 5-way tie for 9th place, Mary Washington Hospital scored almost as high as nationally ranked hospitals in 4 adult specialties. This Fredericksburg hospital also received recognition for patient safety with their demonstrated ability to reduce accidents and medical mistakes. They are recognized in Northern Virginia and ranked #3 in the Washington Metro area.
Located in the Richmond Metro area, Memorial Regional Center received near national ranking in at least one adult specialty. Although it is tied for 9th place in the state of Virginia, this hospital is the #3 ranked hospital in the Richmond Metro area.
As the final part of the 5-part-9th-place tie, Sentara RMH Medical Center provides top marks in at least 2 adult specialties, coming close to national rankings. As the #9 hospital in the Shenandoah Valley, RMH Medical Center gets high performance marks in 2 other adult procedures/conditions.

Finally, with the tie ending, Sentara Leigh Hospital offers near national ranking performances in 1 adult specialty, with high performance marks in another 2. As the 14th ranked hospital in Virginia, Sentara Leigh is the #3 hospital in the Virginia Beach Metro area.
Ushering in another, but final, tie in the top ranked hospitals, August Health shows high performance marks in at least 2 adult procedures and is recognized in the Shenandoah Valley for its superior care.
With a performance close to national levels in 1 adult specialty, this Northern Virginia hospital also receive high performance marks for at least 1 additional procedure/condition. Inova Mount Vernon is tied for 15th statewide, but comes in as the #6 hospital in the Washington Metro area.
Another hospital tied for 15th place in Virginia, Johnston-Willis is located on the outskirts of Richmond. With high performance marks in at least 2 adult procedures/conditions, Johnston-Willis ranks as the #4 hospital in the Richmond Metro area.
As the final tie for 15th place in Virginia, Martha Washington is a strong counterpart to the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville. This hospital receives high performance marks in 2 adult procedures/conditions and is recognized in Central Virginia for its superior performance.

As the last regionally ranked hospital on our list, Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington is far from the bottom when it comes to performance. It is ranked #9 in the Washington Metro area and scored near national level for at least 1 adult specialty, as well as offering accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
While we certainly hope you don’t need to use any of these facilities any time soon, it is nice to know that they’re there when you need them.
