Butterflies are beautiful creatures, and luckily we have our very own butterfly farm in the middle of the city that features both native Kentucky butterflies and other exotic species of insects. Check out the article below to learn more about the Idlewild Butterfly Farm, which offers both an informative butterfly tour and an insect shop.
This magical butterfly house is hidden in the Shelby Park neighborhood.
The building gives little indication that a butterfly garden exists within the property, other than a small sign on the door and a beautiful butterfly mural on the side of the building. It's easy to miss, but the fact that it's hidden makes it all the more magical.
Step inside these doors and you'll find an outdoor butterfly farm and insectarium, plus a shop for live butterflies that can be released and ethically-sourced butterfly art.
Idlewild raises butterflies to show and sell.
You can choose to take a tour of the entire facilities for $10 per person or simply visit their shop. During the tour, experienced entomologists will explain the details of butterfly-rearing and even allow you to handle some of the butterflies.
In their shop, Idlewild also offers many species of native Kentucky butterflies for purchase that can be released at special events.
They also feature ethically-sourced insect art.
Some might find it strange, but butterfly and insect art is growing in popularity. Idlewild offers a variety of artwork and jewelry made from insects, and ensures that these pieces are created with insects from ethical farms like their own.
Their exotic insectarium is incredible!
View some of the most interesting insects in the world at their insectarium. Pictured above is an Orchid Mantis and big, beautiful Luna Moth. These strange and beautiful insects will take your breath away and remind you how amazing nature can be.
The outdoor butterfly garden is a lovely little oasis.
Here you can view various kinds of butterflies as they flutter around you in this magical garden.
It seems butterflies love the sweet taste of watermelon just as much as we do! These open fruits will attract decent crowd of them. There are other plants around the greenhouse that attract and feed the butterflies as well.
Butterfly plants can be purchased here as well.
They offer plants for purchase that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds during the warmer seasons. These plants are guaranteed to be raised without chemical insecticides, as the residue would kill these insects they work hard to raise.
