No matter where you are from, you are basically guaranteed to have picked up some native slang that out-of-towners just don’t seem to understand. If you are new to Denver and just can’t seem to pick up our native tongue, consider this your guide to our top 11 words and phrases:
1.) Blucifer
Nothing says "Welcome to Denver" quite like a 32-foot tall, 9,000 pound blue bronco, which is exactly what you will find standing guard over Pena Boulevard near the airport. What you may not realize about this terrifying sculpture, however, is that its official name is Blue Mustang and that he crushed his sculptor to death during construction.
2.) DIA
DIA = Denver International Airport (AKA the business that Blucifer protects whilst thinking about eating each and every one of us). Duh.
3.) Pop
Pop definitely isn't a Denver-only term, but when you are here, call it a pop and NOT a soda... we don't take kindly to those who call carbonated beverages "soda."
4.) Kings
Kings is short for King Soopers; Colorado's chain of Kroger-owned stores that sells not only the freshest of groceries, but also flowers, patio furniture, and home goods!
5.) LoDo
LoDo is the nickname for our beloved Lower Downtown (get it?), which is home to both one of the coolest neighborhoods in the city AND the Rox! Speaking of Rox...
6.) Rox
...Rox is short for the Colorado Rockies; our amazing baseball team that is having an epic season for once! Oh, and do you see who is up to bat in this picture? It's no other than...
7.) CarGo
...Mr. Carlos "We Want Tacos" Gonzales, who we lovingly refer to as CarGo!
8.) Rockpile
Your eyes do not deceive you; this is indeed another baseball-related term (are you noticing a pattern?). The Rockpile refers to the backbreaking, $4 seats in Coors Field.
9.) Blake Street Bombers
Last baseball term, we promise! The Blake Street Bombers refers to the Colorado Rockies dream team of Dante Bichette, Ellis Burks, Vinny Castilla, Andres Galarraga and Larry Walker. #neverforget
10.) Wads
Wads is short for Wadsworth, which is seen here crossing the equally popular and busy Mississippi.
11.) The Strong Arm
Injured in an auto accident? Before you do ANYTHING (like call your insurance, an ambulance, etc.), you better call Frank "The Strong Arm" Azar, who is open 24/7 and is now the official law partner of the Denver Broncos.
