We don’t know how donuts became “trendy,” since they’ve been around for a very long time, but we’re sure happy that they are. Artisan donut shops have been popping up all over the country, and it looks like they’re here to stay. Who can say “no” to light, airy, fried bits of doughy goodness all covered in sugar? If you’re one of those people, this article isn’t for you. All we know is that when it comes to donuts, we have no willpower. Here are seven donut shops in the Twin Cities that will have your mouth watering uncontrollably:
1. Bogart's Doughnut Co.
Want to know what falling in love with a donut feels like? Sink your teeth into one of Bogart's brown butter glazed donuts and you'll begin to understand. Bogart's keeps its flavors relatively simple, but elevates flavors in a way you won't find anywhere else. Their vanilla bean cream donut is filled with a delicate but velvety vanilla cream speckled with vanilla beans and rolled in granulated sugar, making it oh-so-heavenly. Visit their storefront in South Minneapolis or their counter inside the IDS Tower downtown to begin your love affair. Bogart's Doughnut Co. 903 W 36th St, Minneapolis, MN 55408.
2. Glam Doll Donuts
Do you prefer your donut shop to match your ultra groovy personality? If so, Glam Doll is the perfect spot for you. The shop located on Eat Street is constantly inventing new flavors and always has a variety of vegan donuts on hand. In late 2016, The Dolls opened up a second location that offers beer pairings with their donuts, as well as a selection of savory donuts including the coveted mac 'n' cheese donut. Glam Doll Donuts, 2605 Nicollet Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55408.
3. Angel Food Bakery
After you've made it to Hell at Hell's Kitchen, pop over to their bakery, Angel Food and you'll find nothing but heavenly baked goods. You'll find a smorgasbord of cakes, cupcakes, breads, and pretzels, but the real star of the show are the bakery's donuts. Whether they're covered in maple glaze and bacon, or vanilla icing and Fruity Pebbles, you'll take one bite of these and feel as if you're in heaven. Angel Food Bakery, 89 S 9th St, Minneapolis, MN 55402.
4. Cardigan Donuts
Cardigan Donuts is the newest addition to the Minneapolis donut scene and we are so happy it's here. Anyone who works downtown Minneapolis is now privy to these freshly made and glazed donuts. Our first time their we tried the essential Old Fashioned donut and were amazed that it was still warm from the fryer. It made us come back for more to explore their more inventive flavors like The Farmhouse Donut: a pastry filled with egg yolk buttercream, topped with maple icing and candied bacon. Cardigan Donuts, City Center, 40 S 7th St #207, Minneapolis, MN 55402.
5. Sssdude-Nutz
We don't even know how to describe this shop, but we know you need to pay a visit. This summer, Sssdude-Nutz is operating out of a food truck until students come piling back to Dinkytown in the fall, to buy these square-shaped cake donuts covered in everything from Fruity Pebbles to Butterfingers. Sssdude-Nutz, 640 4th Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55415.
6. Mojo Monkey Donuts
Mojo Monkey Donuts has once been described as a hipster's paradise. While we can't comment on that, we can tell you just how excellent this donut shop is. Our favorite donuts include their s'mores donut, topped with a humongous homemade marshmallow and the salted pretzel donut. Mojo Monkey Donuts, 1169 7th St W, Saint Paul, MN 55102.
7. A Baker's Wife's Pastry Shop
Now this bakery might look a little plain to you in comparison to the wondrous and whimsical donut shops we've shown you, but a Baker's Wife shows you that looks can be deceiving. This cash-only old fashioned bakery does the classics, and they do them well. If the donuts aren't calling your name (although we can't fathom why), the bakery has a solid collection of other delectable baked goods. A Baker's Wife's Pastry Shop, 4200 S 28th Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55406.
