Hiking around New Hampshire you can see some pretty amazing things – deer, moose, stunning foliage. But one hike in New Hampshire will lead you to truly unforgettable sites – the ruins of a plane crash that have been there so long that they’ve become part of the New Hampshire wilderness. This Mount Success hike is tough, but truly unforgettable. Check it out this plane crash hike that you will never forget.
Mount Success is tucked on the boarder between New Hampshire and Maine, in an isolated area that probably has more moose than people.
Northeast Flight 792 left Laconia for a short flight for Berlin, but became lost in a winter storm. Visibility was extremely low, when all of a sudden the clouds cleared and the pilot was that the plane was headed for a head-on collision with a mountain.
He quickly pulled up, making the head-on crash into a belly landing. He also turned off the plane's electronics to prevent an explosion. Amazingly, the seven captain and crew survived the initial crash, but two people died during the night.
The next day the survivors were able to search planes from the summit of Mount Success, and the five survivors were transported to the hospital in Berlin.
Today the crash site remains a spooky and somber attraction along the Appalachian Trail in New Hampshire. The fuselage, wings and tail are all still hidden in the mountain wilderness.
