As someone who hails from a small town in Colorado, I can vouch for the overall friendliness and hospitality of those who live in small(er) towns. That being said, how can we pick just one to name the friendliest in the entire state? Read on and you will see why we love charming Lake City and all of its town pride.
Incorporated in 1873, Lake City became an overnight sensation because of its proximity to the Colorado Mineral Belt, which brought in a surge of 5,000-some new residents to the area.
After the mineral deposits ran dry in 1879, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad brought in the next flood of residents, which helped the local economy significantly through the mid-1890s.
They say all good things come to an end, which was proven when the railroad slowed and Lake City entered an economic decline in the late 1890s. However, by 1915, visitors from around both the state and country had discovered beautiful Lake City, making it a popular tourist destination.
Ever since this time, tourism has been the mountain town's primary industry, with the Lake City Historic District even being named a National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
What should you expect when you visit the town? Aside from spectacular scenery and outdoor opportunities galore, you can expect to find kindhearted and humble folks both inside the businesses and on the streets.
Speaking of outdoor activities galore, the Lake City area is home to some of the state's most pristine campgrounds...
...epic fishing...
...and some flat-out unforgettable exploration opportunities.
Fun fact: Lake City has hundreds of miles of hiking and off-road trails.
In addition to its world-class outdoor recreation, Lake City is also home to the fascinating Lake City National Historic District...
